It is easy to think that there has been a huge change in marketing over the last few years. In fact that is what many are saying and writing about.
In reality it hasn’t and that is because while the activities and tools do change, the fundamentals do not.
What I am talking about is the centre of marketing which has always been about connecting with customers. Without them you do not have a business as no customers taking action = no money coming in = no business.
This has always been the case. Today we have many tools and marketing activities we can use that make it easier to connect, but it is still all about your customers.
In fact it could be a case of us remembering the fundamentals.
I wrote a post about a small business that started in 1932 and was doing many things that we look to action today. Have a read about the Wall Drugstore and what they did.
Another reason why I was thinking about the fundamentals is the recent post by Niall Devitt on Bloggertone and the Global Corner Store.
What is interesting about corner stores is that some have stayed in business even when large supermarkets dominate the market by sticking to the fundamentals.
Action for you to take
Have a read through the posts and then check to see if you are following their examples.
If you have gone away from the fundamentals then just note down where and start taking small steps to get back on track.
Also thanks to those of you who have taken the poll about what you want to know about marketing now. If you haven’t takes a few seconds at the most and feel free to add to the list.

So very true. Connecting with customers is the greatest marketing fundamental. I guess the methods and avenues have changed but this idea has not.
I think some people forget this because of that annoying old stigma that “marketing is advertising”…

Hi Fiona,
You are right about the old stigma and it is a shame because it only confuses people.
In your marketing consultancy, how do you overcome this with your clients?
