In many areas of our lives we have a check up, such as going to the dentist or doctor to see that everything is working okay.
With our cars you take your car to the mechanic who does a maintenance check to make sure all parts are running smoothly to get the best performance out of it and not break down.
If you pass on the check up then you could miss a small problem that will only get worse over time and become a bigger problem.
The same thing goes with marketing your products or services. Unless you do a review you could miss problems that can come back and hurt your business. It doesn’t need to be long and drawn out you just need to see that all elements are performing as they should.
By conducting a regular marketing review you can identify if anything needs adjusting or improving and this is a lot simpler than having to go in for a major overhaul.
Here is a simple check list for you to use so that you can highlight areas that need attention and of course congratulate yourself on those areas that going well. There are different ways of assessing each area such as needs improving, pass or fail. It really is up to you.
Product or Service Quality
This is just a check to make sure the quality is of the standard that meets or exceeds your customers’ expectations.
Current Key Customers
As this is an important area you need to check that they are still loyal, giving you referrals, buying on a regular basis etc. If you have not heard from them in a while getting feedback is a good start.
Sales Performance
Have a look to see if the sales pattern have changed or if you offer a range of products and services what is bringing in most of the cash or is most in demand by customers.
Pricing
It is a good idea to check your prices especially against your competitors and to see if they need increasing. If your costs have gone up then it could be time to raise your prices.
Potential Customers
One way to grow your business is with new customers, so you need to check that the tactics and tools you are using are getting you the leads you need.
Marketing Communication
This is about your key message and to see if it is still appropriate. Don’t think of changing it if it is appealing to your customers, you just need to make sure it is hitting the right spot with them
Marketing Tactics
Are you getting the results you want? Go through the list of activities and tools you have actioned and look at the results. If some of the tactics are not working, consider either getting rid of them or making changes before you action them again.
Customer Service
Although this is probably a strong area it is always a good idea to see if there are any parts that could be improved to ensure this stays an area of strength.
If there are other areas you look at, please add to the list by leaving a comment.

How To Do a Simple Marketing Check Up…
In many areas of our lives we have a check up, such as going to the dentist or doctor to see that everything is working okay. With cars we take them to the mechanic who does a maintenance check to make sure everything is running smoothly. The same goes…
Susan,
An EPIC post! Great analogies of a doctor’s check-up and a check-up at the auto mechanic. You have presented a marketing plan to keep a business running on all cylinders!!!
Yoni
Hi Yoni,
Thanks for your comment and having just had my car in for a service well after I should have made me remember don’t let the check ups slip by.
Loved your latest post.
Susan
Hi Susan,
As I was reading this post, it occurred to me it goes hand-in-hand with another one your wrote about too many ideas and not enough action: (http://www.m4bmarketing.com/too-many-ideas-not-enough-action/) I know my customers suffer from the same thing. Often, when I contact current key customers I haven’t heard from in awhile, it’s simply because they haven’t found the time. It’s an easy thing to put off especially if you get in the mindset of “I don’t want to bug busy people” but maybe those people are just waiting to be bugged.
Thanks again for another great post.
Hi Sarah,
I think you are right. It does seem we have this busy mindset, however I do wonder if we are concentrating on the right tasks. I have found usually customers are more than happy for us to contact them. It takes the onus off them.
Appreciate your comment.
I’m enjoying your articles.
That’s a great point. Small businesses often keep churning out the same marketing activities for no reason.
A regular marketing check up is a great idea and something that needs to be done quite regularly to trim off what’s not working and do more of what is working.
Thanks Michael and I like the word you used “trim” as the check up does mean you throw out the tactic, just make adjustments. It is a good way of expressing what you can do to get better results.
